About Caroline Hawks, Hanks

Caroline's father is a 1st cousin of President Abraham Lincoln.

DEATH: Kirwin, Kansas Newspaper "A Terrible Accident."

Last Saturday morning about ten o'clock, the people of Kirwin were shocked to learn that Mrs. Caroline Hawks met her death, by being thrown from a buggy by a runaway team. The particulars as we learned them are as follows: Mrs. Hawks and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. George [Elida Baker] Hawks who was here on a visit from Iowa, were out buggy driving on Bow Creek last Saturday morning, and when descending a hill near the old Batten place, the neck yoke became detached or broken and the buggy running onto the heels of the horses. They became frightened and unmanageable running away and throwing the two ladies out of the buggy, instantly killing Mrs. Caroline Hawks, and breaking a rib for Mrs. George Hawks. Death resulted from breaking of the neck.

Funeral services were held at the residence of Mrs. Hawks in the city [Kirwin] Saturday evening, the service conducted by Rev. Markham and the house was full of people. The remains were taken by relatives to Des Moines, Iowa, all of them departing to that place Sunday morning, some of them going from this station with the remains, and the balance taking the Rock Island at Agra. It was Mrs. Hawks wish that when she died to be laid to rest beside her husband in Iowa [Elkhart, Iowa], hence the long journey by rail. [note: info in brackets added by Stones Calling]

_______________________ BIO: Caroline, as a widow, came in 1884 to Phillips County, Kansas from Iowa. She purchased a farm on Bow Creek from Almarine Martin, the husband of her niece Mary Jane Shurts, and lived there until two years before her death when she bought a residence in Kirwin and lived there for the convenience of the children who desired good school privileges.

When she was 17 years old, Caroline united with the Baptist Church and was a member until she united with the Methodist Church in Bow Creek about 4 years before her death.

_______________________ "Kirwin Chief," newspaper- November 24, 1883 Al Martin sold his home place to Mrs. Caroline Hawks [aunt of Almarine's wife, Mary Jane Shurts]. We are pleased to state that Mr. Martin will not leave us, but will move on his other farm on the east side of Bow Creek.
