"Descendant of Col William Stephens Smith, of New York... who entered the army at the age of eighteen; was on Washington's staff a great part of the time, and fought in twenty-two battles. His wife was the only daughter of John and Abigail Adams."



Daughter of John Peter Dewint who died November 17, 1870 and Caroline Amelia Smith. She first married Andrew Downing who died in the Henry Clay disaster on July 28, 1852 and secondly married Judge John J. Monell. Caroline was the granddaughter of President John Adams. She is buried next to her first husband.
