About John Peter de Windt
It was found in the publicly available online records of the Island of Saint Croix that a John Peter Dewindt was classified as a "mulatto" and was the son of Rosey, a recently freed slave. A working hypothesis is that he made the decision to move to the United States as a young man, but not before he fathered Louisa with Aletta DeWindt, who later remarried and changed her last name to Jackson and had to raise Louisa by herself on Saint Croix.
