Caroline Stebbins grew up in the large gambrel-roofed house of her father, Col. Joseph Stebbins, hero of the Revolutionary War. The house was built in 1773. When Caroline married in 1810, she moved north on the Deerfield street to the home of her new husband, Seth Sheldon (1787-1860), a farmer. Her mother-in-law, Persis (Hoyt) Sheldon also occupied the house until her death in 1829. The front part of the house had two parlors on the first floor and three chambers above; the ell, built about 1805, was fitted with two kitchens on the first floor and chambers above. Caroline and Seth had four living children, one of whom, George, born 1818 lived to write the two-volume "History of Deerfield" in 1895.
