About Caroline Henretta Sommerfeld
(As told by Kenneth Sommerfeld, the Great-Great Grandson of Julius Benning. This information was sent to me by Kenneth Sommerfeld himself.)
My Great/Great Grandfather on my Father's side was born in Viliof, Germany on December 17, 1838. His parents were Johan Benning and Christine Jesse. He came to the U.S. aboard the "ottawa", a one funnel three mast Bark, arriving at New York's Castle Garden pier on August 3, 1867. His wife died in Germany prior to his immigration. He had the responsibility of raising two of his sister Caroline's children, Emil and Herman Sommerfeld...Caroline's husband Gottfried had died in Germany and she came to the U.S. in 1865 and needed help with the two young boys. Julius was a shopkeepter and was pretty self sufficient. In 1876, a neighbor, Auguste "Steuve" Neumann became a widow and Julius and Auguste were married on March 7, 1876 in Alpena County. Two children were born to Julius and Auguste. In 1880, the family moved to Alpena and Julius bought a lot on the corner of North Second Ave and Clark St. Soon after, Julius built and operated a grocery store on the main floor and he and his wife lived upstars.
Julius married for a third time on October 15, 1913 to Matilde Kindt. Julius finally applied for citizenship on February 9, 1918. He died on April 11, 1924.
