Carrie Mae Altgilbers, 102, of Sunset Home, formerly of Sycamore, died Monday (May 17, 2010) in the home.
She was born on April 8, 1908, in Stoutsville, Mo., a daughter of Richard and Margaret (Connolly) Whelan.
She survived the black death, the Great Depression, 11 wars and lived to see 25 presidents elected. The family moved to Quincy where Carrie got a job at the Pierson Shirt factory. She met and married Edwin Altgilbers in 1927. He died in 1978 after 51 years of marriage.
Carrie was a member of St. John Catholic Church for 82 years until it closed. She then became a member of St. Francis Catholic Church where she is still a parishioner. Carrie lived in the home that she and Edwin built until she was 100 years old. Carrie did ironings for people and altar linens for her church until she was 95 -- and in fact her ironing board is being used at the Old State Capitol Museum in Springfield.
Carrie was probably the sweetest and kindest mother, grandmother and friend there ever was. She knew the name of every one of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Her family was her life. She loved her Catholic faith and had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother through the holy rosary. She considered herself blessed to think she lived to see one of her great-grandsons enter the seminary to become a Catholic priest.
She is survived by three children, Richard Altgilbers, Phyllis McDonald and her husband, Richard, and Judy Mueller and her husband, Bill; grandchildren, Peggy Harris, Dan Altgilbers and his wife, Jennifer, Cheri Anderson and her husband, Roger, Mary Riley and her husband, Bill, Rick Altgilbers, Michaeleen Kamphaus and her husband, Kent, Tally McDonald and his wife, Gretchen, Dominic McDonald and his wife, Lisa, Kim Hilgenbrinck and her husband, Mike, Damian McDonald and his wife, Lisa, Chris McDonald and his wife, Lisa, Jennifer Shields and her husband, Rick, Gerri Elbe and her husband, Mike, Blaise McDonald and his wife, Wendy, Rock Weeks and his wife, Joan, Jeri Lynn Sprinkle and her husband, Lyle, Derrick Weeks and his wife, Suzy, Chelle Schutte and her husband, Joe, Carrie Law and her husband, Bryon, Tim Mueller and his wife, Lisa, and Kristen Mueller and her companion, Robert Cannady; great-grandchildren, Roger Harris, Chris Harris, Dan Altgilbers, Roger Anderson, Lindsey Anderson, Vivien Tournear, Amy Webb and her husband, James, Jessica Riley, Nicole Altgilbers, Priya Mehra, Ravi Mehra, Austin McDonald, Shawn McDonald and his wife, Jackie, Quinn McDonald, Aaron McDonald and his wife, Nikki, Devin McDonald, Blaise Hilgenbrinck and his wife, Krista, Chase Hilgenbrinck, Mya Spector and her husband, Matt, Connor McDonald, Bryn Peters and her husband, Tyler, Brie Matlach and her husband, Daniel, Christopher McDonald, Keaton McDonald, Brennan McDonald, Caroline Blair, Miles Blair, Amanda Blair and Hayley Shields, Olivia Elbe, Harrison Elbe, Lincoln Elbe, Harper McDonald, Jack McDonald, Heather Nieders and her husband, Eric, Jared Weeks and his wife, Ashley, Jeaneen Bohanan and her husband, Brett, Shereen Inghram and her husband, Josh, Mariah Fessler, Taylor Weeks, Erica Schutte, Kayla Schutte, Blake Law, Courtney Law, Jaxon Mueller, and Brinkley Mueller; and great-great-grandchildren, Jim, Bryon, Dominic, Keegan, Kerigan, Bradley, Nicholas, Cayson, Breckyn, Carter, Trey, Court and Aiden.
