He was a Farmer and Politician. As a son of 'trekboere' he had no regular education but enough to read and write. He also became a stock farmer and owned no fixed land. At the end of 1825 he moved with his family to 'Agter Zuurberg'. Because he paid no 'opgaaf' for the year 1825 it cannot, without doubt be ascertained where he was during that year. That is why historians differ as to where his third son Stephanus Johannes, later State President of the Z.A.R. was born. In 1835 he moved with his whole family to the area of the Caledon River in the southern Transoranje. He then owned 20 horses and 2,600 sheep. In 1836 the Caledon farmers joined the A.H. Potgieter 'trek'. Via Natal he ended up in Potchefstroom about 1838/9. He became a member of Potgieter's Raad (Council) and later he became chairman of the Adjunkraad. He was one of the founders of Potchefstroom. Farms associated with him include: De Dorenkom dist Carletonville, Elandspoort, Blaauwdrift, Witrand, Zeekoehoek, and Vethoek.

Source of the above: Text on his gravestone, supplemented by information from Voortrekkerstamouers 1835-1845 by Jan C. Visagie; published 2011; page 259.

Same birth and death dates found in the file of the Van Aarde/Van Aardt family. Similar information found in Die Steenkamps van Suidelike Afrika, Jan Harm Steenkamp.

Some sources say his death location was the same as his burial location.
