Cassa Hawkins (Tracy)

Note: DOB unknown, probably married around l807 in Maryland.

Excerpt: "I have no idea when Cassa Tracy was born, as the 1820 census for Harrison Co. Virginia does not list a family by the name of Joshua Hawkins. ,By 1860, when the family is listed in Harrison Co. census records, it indicates that the family was without a female old enough to be the mother.* Cassa Tracy probably also was originally from Maryland, as I have found records pertaining to the name of Tracy in Maryland before 1800. I believe Tracy is probably of French origin, having been originally "DeTracy", but this line requires a great deal more work to establish, and at present I have no idea as to how to proceed with it.

Therefore, all I know about Cassa Tracy Hawkins, is that she moved to Harrison Co. Virginia with her husband and four children probably in the winter of 1821 or 1820. By that time, I don't suppose there were Indians lurking behind every tree, but still she must have been a typical "frontier wife". She died sometime between John's birth in 1827 and 1850 when Joshua Hawkins remarried.

FAMILY OF JOSHUA HAWKINS- Joshua Hawkins was born about March 20, 1780, presumably ' in or near Cumberland. Maryland. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and while not an ordained minister, he did conduct services for his neighbors in Monroe County, Ohio. in the absence of regular ministers. His whereabouts between the date of his berth in Maryland in 1780. and the birth of his son James in Harrison Co.. Va. in 1821 are unknown.but it is believed that he resided for a time in Loudon Co., Va. during this interval. Joshua Hawkins‘first wife was Cassa Tracy, and they were probably married around l807 in Maryland. No further details are known about Cassa Tracy. According to the 1850 census, Joshua Hawkins. then living in Monroe Coiunty,Ohio, is listed as a farmer. born in Md. and worth about $1,200.00. He was related to the Rev. Wm.Hawkins - either a brother or a nephew.
