A cholera epidemic swept the island of Sicily in 1837, with deaths peaking in the summer months. The toll was so great, and the disease so unfamiliar in western Europe (it first struck Paris only five years earlier) that many people in Sicily, even the relatively well educated, believed the cholera deaths were attributable to mass poisoning by Bourbon spies. Towns shut their gates, and suspected Bourbon sympathizers were murdered.
