KATHERINE/CATHERINE CARTER WILLIAMS BRANCH MAIDEN NAME MAY BE PICKNEY BORN about 1615 ENGLAND DIED 1683 Aug 8 Springfield, MA Burial Old Burying Ground Springfield, MA which is where I placed her. FIND A GRAVE ASSUMES that all the bodies were relocated to Springfield Cemetery. Catherine's name is not on the list. Early settlers did not have headstones, graves were marked with field stones and records have been lost over the years. Easy burials were near the river which flooded the graves and claimed them into the river. In 1848 there were 517 documented relocations to Springfield Cemetery to make way for the railroad. Families had the opportunity to relocate their families to neighboring cemeteries. There was nothing remaining of the early settlers to move to Springfield as burials were 300 years ago. The Cenotaph marker as displayed on this memorial was placed in Springfield Cemetery for the mass of people that were never moved or lost.
