About Catherine Margaretha Hoffman

JACOB HOFFMAN, one of the pioneer brothers who came to North Carolina, was born in the Palatinate of Germany in 1716.
His name there was Hans Jacob Hoffman but the "Hans" prefix was dropped after arriving in America.
Although his brothers, GEORGE, JOHN and CASPER, emigrated to America in the great rush of 1748 to 1751, JACOB, having several small children at the time. did not emigrate until 1768.
He brought with him his wife and four children, the oldest ones, CATHERINE and JACOB, Jr., having just married, remained in the Palatinate until the spring of 1771. The said 1 JACOB HOFFMAN married
Catherina Best in 1745."
They sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, on the British Ship Pennsylvania Packet and arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on October 3. 1768.
Upon arrival, they visited with JACOB'S brother, CASPER, and family and other relatives in Berk's County, Pennsylvania; then among other relatives in Lancaster and York Counties, and later passed on into Shenandoah County, Virginia.
While there the Revolutionary War began absorbing the attention of the Colonists, and JACOB'S son, JOHN, became engaged in some of the skirmishes.
In 1776. however, the family moved on into North Carolina settling in the South Fork River valley some sixteen miles below where GEORGE HOFFMAN had settled only eleven years previously.
They acquired land near the mouth of Big Long Creek in what is now Gaston County.
The exact dates of the deaths of this pioneer and his wife are not known, but many descendants know the place of their burial.

Katherina Margaretha (Bosch) Best was born in Durlach, Stadt Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, a daughter of Wilhelm Sabastian Bosch 1680–1761, also known as Boston Best, and Margaretha Kirchbauer 1694-1750. Both of them immigrated to Philadelphia several years before Katherina Margaretha.

Katherina Margaretha (Bosch) Best married Hans Jacob Hoffman about 1745. From this union was born:

  • Jacob Hoffman Jr. 1746 – 1816 he married Elizabeth Shetley;
  • Catherine Best Hoffman 1749 – 1803, she married Anton, Chas, Glance;
  • Mary Hoffman 1755, she married John Totherow;
  • Hannah Hoffman 1757 she married Micheal Ryhne;
  • John Hoffman 1760 – 1832, He married Margaret Hovis; and
  • Elizabeth Hoffman 1764, she married Jessie Palmer. All of these children were born in Germany. They and their family arrived in Philadelphia about 1768.

Was born in Germany, date & place unknown. Son of Jacob Hoffman, Sr. Came to America with his father and settled, lived and died (1816) on what is now (1915) the Robert Rutledge Place on Hoyles Creek. Garton Co., N.C. Now owned by Early Summery (367 acres). The house was a large 2 story hewn log house. Later moved and converted into a barn.
