Catherine Beasley Higgins Holladay
Birth: Nov. 14, 1797 Kershaw County South Carolina, USA Death: Apr. 19, 1877 Santaquin Utah County Utah, USA
Deseret News 1877 05 02, page 16 At her son's (John Holladay's)residence, Santaquin, April 20, CATHARINE HOLLADAY, of old age. Deceased was born November 14th, 1797, in Casaw [sic] District, South Carolina; married to John Holladay April 16th, 1822; emigrated, with her husband, in the company of the first pioneers in 1824, to Marion County, Alabama, suffering many privations and hardships incident to new country and frontier life; was the mother of twelve children, four sons and eight daughters; heard and embraced the Gospel, early in the Spring of 1844; was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in June, 1844; in March, 1846, with her husband, three sons and five daughters, started west, with a view of meeting with the Saints who had been expelled from Nauvoo, Ill., somewhere on the borders of the Missouri River; passed through Far West, Jackson County, striking the Platte River at Grand Island, and following up that stream to Fort Laramie; hearing nothing from the Church, the company decided to turn and travel south, and [sic]travelled about 300 miles, then struck the Arkansas River at Fort Pueblo, and built winter quarters. Many members of the Mormon attalion wintered at that place, several of whom suffered from privation and sickness, to whom her services were valuable, and are remembered by those who still survive. In the spring of 1847 the company returned to Laramie, thence taking up the trail of the Pioneers westward, arrived in Salt Lake Valley, June 28th, 1847. In 1851 she, with her husband and children, went in company with C. C. Rich and Amasa Lyman, to San Bernardino, California, remaining there until the 15th day of December, 1857, when she again took up the line of march back to Utah, stopping one year at Beaver. In the Fall of 1858 she moved with her husband and children to Santaquin, Utah Co., in which place she buried her husband Jan. 1, 1862. At the death of her husband she was left with two of her grand-children, W. H. and Louisa Boyle; she kept house for them until they were married and had children of their own growing up. She then gave up keeping house in 1870, and went to her son's to live John D. Holladay; when her health permitted she visited amongst her children, grand and great grand-children, who were always glad to see her, and give her a kind welcome. She lived and died a faithful Latter-day Saint, bearing a strong testimony to the truth of the work of God in the last days. She retained the full use of her reason and memory to the end of her life. She had filled in the measure of her being on the earth, as a Saint, wife, and mother, and died in the faith of the gospel, and with an earnest of a glorious resurrection.
