About Catherine Kean

Bom near Woodford, County Galway, Ireland, Catherine spent seven years in America before moving to Australia. Sailing in the ship "Minnehaha" with her husband and her sister, Mrs. Mary Kelly in 1858.

Catherine died on the 24th August, at her residence, "Woodford," Leigh Creek, Catherine, relict of the late Coleman Kean, died 1876) and mother of John (deceased), Mary (deceased), Bartholomew (deceased). Bedelia (deceased), Annie (Mrs. Jno. Furey, Gredgwin), Patrick (Coghill's Creek), Thomas, and Catherine (Leigh Creek), and Michael Edmond (deceased). May her soul rest in peace.

Mrs. Kean, was described as one of the oldest, and most, respected residents of Leigh Creek, had reached the age of 89 years. Her obituary said "She had made hosts of friends by her fine personality and kindly charitable nature. In Church matters she was a constant and generous helper. ...She leaves a grown-up family of sons and daughters to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted mother. The remains were removed from her late residence to St. Michael's Church, Bungaree Where the Rev. T. Duggan celebated Requiem Mass for the repose of her soul, in the presence of a very large congregation. The funeral proceeded to the Ballarat Old cemetery. The casket bearers were Messrs. J. Kean. M. Moran, T. Walsh and W. Forbes. The Rev. T. D'Arcy officiated at the graveside"
