Catherine was born in New Jersey to Benjamin Courson and Sarah Dungan. Catherine married Lt. Alexander McClelland a veteran of the Revolutionary War in 1795. Alexander was farming 300 acres in Westmoreland County at the time that he had received in appreciation of his military service. In 1795 Alexander and Catherine pushed farther west to Lickling County, Ohio and there farmed and raised 9 children. Alexander died in 1924 and several of their sons moved on to Marion County, Illinois. The boys wrote back that life was much better in Illinois and in 1841 Catherine along with her daughter Rachel's family moved by covered wagon to Marion County, Illinois. Catherine settled in Sandoval Township and remained there until her death in 1853.
