About Catherine R. "Katie" Wheeler (Wheeler)

Catherine R. Wheeler was the second wife of John Ramey Wheeler. She lived in the Wheeler homestead in Blaine, Kentucky, until her death. She is buried on the hillside just north of the Wheeler house. Although there is a headstone marking her grave, the stone does not record her date of death. Catherine, or "Kate", was living with her son Amos and his family at the time of the 1900 census. It is likely that she died between 1900 and 1910, as she is not listed in the 1910 census.

An interesting story was related by Neva Lemaster Wheeler, wife of Franklin Wheeler. Apparently when Kate Wheeler was dying, Isaac Wheeler awoke Franklin and told him to hitch up the mules. They went to the bedside of Kate and Franklin vividly remembered seeing his grandmother dying. He said that she was talking with Jesus and had her hands raised towards Heaven. Franklin always wanted to die just as he had seen his grandmother, and according to his son Earle, he also died talking to Jesus.

Since Franklin was born in 1901, it seems that Kate Wheeler must have died very near to 1910.

NOTE: There is some conflict between the records of Lawrence County and Johnson County as to the date of marriage. Johnson records the date of marriage as June 30, 1853.
