About Catherine Matilda Spencer
The North Western Courier (Narrabri NSW) Thu 20 Apr 1939
OBITUARY The Passing of a Pioneer
The death has been recorded of Mrs. Catherine Matilda Spencer, who passed away at 'Kiaora' Private Hospital, Randwick, Sydney.
Deceased was well known and respected in the Narrabri district, to which she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Eather in the early days, residing here up to within three years ago when she retired to reside in Sydney.
The late Mrs. Spencer was the 13th member of the family. By a coincidence she passed away on the 13th April, at the age of 82 years.
Mr. H. G. Spencer, husband of deceased, who predeceased her some three years, was born in England and came out with his father when quite young, in a sailing ship which took six months on the trip. The late Mr. Spencer served some years as Mayor of Narrabri, when the late Mrs. Spencer had taken her place as Mayoress on public occasions. Mr. Spencer was noted, as a good rifle shot, hold ing the Captaincy of the Narrabri Club for a number of years. He had won the King's Prize in Sydney.
The late Mrs. Spencer had a family of five, namely: -George (Narrabri) Vera (Mrs. J. McNamara) (Sydney), and Norma (Mrs G. Kewin) (Parkes); who survive her, and Eric and Beatrice, who predeceased her.
Some of her six brothers and seven sisters predeceased her, Messrs L. Eather and W. Eather of Narrabri being brothers.
Four grandchildren also survive her (two predeceased).
The funeral took place in the Church of England portion of the cemetery at Botany.
