Mrs. Catherine McCabe Collapses in the Street; Mercury Reaches 96.

10,000 IN FLIGHT TO SWIMMING POOLS

One woman died and two men prostrated was the heat toll in Omaha Saturday as the mercury soared to 96, breaking the season's record and setting a new mark for June 21 in this city.

Mrs. Catherine McCabe, 80, 2916 North Sixty-seventh street, collapsed on the street and was dead when a physician reached her.

Traveler Collapses

Thomas Lewis, 18, San Diego, Cal., collapsed while sitting in the Henshaw hotel, where he was resting between trains. He recovered quickly.

While walking from a neighborhood grocery, Mrs. McCabe collapsed on the walk at Sixty-sixth and Maple streets, a block from her dwelling.

Nobody saw her fall, but Pat McArdle, 2616 North Sixty-sixth avenue, walking by, saw the aged woman huddled on the walk. Dr. W. H. Loechner was called, but Mrs. McCabe was dead. Dr. Loechner said the heat was the cause of death.

Mrs. McCabe had been a resident of Omaha for 50 years. She had been in unusually good health considering her age.

Thousands in Pools

She is survived by a daughter, Miss Mary McCabe, with whom she lived, and by four sons, Patrick and Joseph of Omaha, Francis of Los Angeles, and Bernard of Salt Lake City.

The temperature of 96 at 2 p.m. drove thousands of Omaha residents to swimming pools and bathing beaches in and near the city.
