Charity (Whitfield) Herring was born in North Carolina.

Charity Whitfield, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Goodman) Whitfield,[1] was born about 1737. Some sources list her as the 9th child, and that her parents were living in Bertie County, North Carolina in 1723; they later moved to Rockford, Lenoir County.[2]

Among her siblings, Sarah (Whitfield) Herring (abt.1720-1770), married Daniel Herring and had children.[1] Some sources describe Mr Herring as Stephen Herring.[2]

Charity first married Frederick O'Daniel and they had four children:[1]

  1. Owen O'Daniel[2]
  2. William O'Daniel[2]
  3. Alexander O'Daniel, who married Elizabeth Grady[2]
  4. Elizabeth (O'Daniel) Winkfield, who married William Winkfield[2]

After Frederick died, Charity remarried to Daniel Herring, (or Stephen Herring) the widow of her sister, Sarah,[2] and they had two children:[1]

  • Benjamin Herring[2]
  • Whitfield Herring who married (1782) Mary Croom of Duplin County, North Carolina, daughter of Anne Grady[2]
