Lallaing, le château-Albums de Croy

Born around 1466 in Lille, he took possession of his ancestors' land in 1498, after the death of his cousin Jean, and took great care of his domain and his "subjects" of Lalaing. Preparing for the future dignity of his seigneury and in order to make it more considerable, the "baron" of Lalaing (a title that he already attributed to himself before), obtained, in 1508, the erection of his land in barony pairie of Hainaut, with incorporation of the land of Quévy-le-Petit, as well as those of Escaillon and Bruille, in 1511, to hold the whole "in only one fief" of pairie (Preuves, n°s XX and XXI). Here are the names of his children:

1° François de Lalaing, who died young, is buried in Deynze, in front of the tomb of Simon, his great-grandfather, under a stone decorated with coats of arms, and on which he is described as "second child and eldest son of Sir Charles, Count of Lalaing" (Goethals, Miroir, II, page 514).

It is to him and to his brother Jacques that Luxembourg the herald dedicates in 1509 "The Blazon of the arms of Lalaing,"

2° Jacques de Lalaing, lord of Escornaix (and eldest son, in 1517), "captain" (military governor) of Oudenaarde, chamberlain of Charles V, "who passed on his way back from the siege of Maisiere", on October 30, 1521; lies in the convent of Beaumont in Valenciennes.

3° Charles, who follows.

4° Philippe de Lalaing, author of the branch of Hoochstrate, who will follow.

5° Marguerite de Lalaing, born in Oudenaarde around September 1508, died in 1602, married to Evrard, knight, lord of PALLANT; whose posterity and notably the counts of Culembourg.

6° Anne de Lalaing, canoness of Mons (in 1515), wife of Josse, count DE MONTFORT; of which posterity.

__________

In 1508, Philip the Handsome appointed a grandson of the knight Simon Charles de Lalaing, baron of Escornaix, son of Josse, to the military government of the city and castle of Oudenaarde, adding the office of high bailiff of the castellany.
However, Charles was content to be only the holder of this office and let it be occupied, with the consent of the prince, by another person, also bearing the title of high bailiff. In 1505 he received the collar of the Golden Fleece, and in 1522 Charles V made the land and seigneury of Lalaing a county in his favor.

He was married to Jacqueline d'Luxembourg, daughter of Jacques, knight of the order, baron of Gavre, lord of Fiennes and Sotteghem. We believe that Jacqueline was born in Oudenaarde, in the hotel occupied by this noble family, which for a long time afterward still bore the name of Hotel de Luxembourg.

Count Charles de Lalaing died at the castle of which he had been captain on July 17, 1525, at the age of 59.

His body was transferred to the Abbey of Les Prés, a women's monastery near Douai, where a superb monument was erected in his memory (5).

His son Philip succeeded him as captain-governor of the city and castle of Oudenaarde, by letters of 31 January 1525 (1526 n.s.). When he was a young man, he continued to reside near his mother, in the castle of Burgundy; but, since his marriage to Anne, heiress of Count William of Rennebourg, he occupied the hotel of Luxembourg, located nearby.

The dowager of Charles de Lalaing died at Audenarde, in 1544. It is likely that she was buried in a church in that city.
