About Charles Jenson Berlin

Charles Johnson Story:

Born to Jon and Regina Anderson BERLIN, Carl Johan Gustav Johnson (born Dec

29, 1843) in Malmo, Bosarps, Sweden. He is the oldest of 9 children.

Johanna Jonsson Berlin Mar 19, 1846, Anetta Sofie Berlin July 23, 1848,

andrew Emanuel Berlin, Nov 5, 1849, Johan Gustaf Berlin, Dec 27, 1851,

Josephine Dorothea Berlin Mar 19, 1856

Annetta Sophia Belrin Mar 19, 1859, Axel Emil Berlin Jun 13, 1860, and Hyrum

Berlin Feb 28, 1862.

The family followed the patronomics as did many of the families back then.

That is up until Carl (Charlie) he stayed with the old style and took his

dad's first name Jon and added son on the end. The rest of the family stayed

with Berlin, which was the name of the General that Jon worked under in the

Swedish Army. The name Johnson was first Jonsson and later changed in America.

Why the name "Berlin" on Charley's Headstone Jan Johnson : Saturday, January 01, 2000

In Sweden, they used a system called patronymics. Each generation used as a surname the father's given name with-son-added. Only one of Jon Andersson and Regina's sons, their first, Carl (or Charles aka Charley Johnson) used this line of naming. Carl's family went by the name of Johnson.

Another way of gaining a surname came when a young man served in the Swedish Armed Forces. Charley's father (Jon Anderson) joined the Swedish army and served for 33 years. Soldiers would use the name of their regiment as a sir-name. Jon Anderson took up and used the name of his regiment. Thus we have the name 'Berlin', his regiment name was used by Jon Anderson as a surname.

Anders Petter Anderson (the son of Jon and Regina) changed his name to Andrew Emanuel Berlin and he was known as such. (No information was given why he changed his given name.)
