About Charles Betts, {Australian Immigrant} 1843
The Armidale Chronicle (NSW : 1894 - 1929) Sat 19 Jul 1919
Uralla Deaths.
Mr. Charles Betts, of Woodville, died on Saturday last. He was 84 years of age, and was born at Notting-hamshire (Eng.), coming to Australia with his father at the ages of nine years. His father commenced work on Salisbury Estate, and a little later Charles, then quite a lad, started in the employ of Mr. William Dangar, at Gostwyck, and remained there for 51 years, when the owner retired him on pension and provided him with the cottage at Woodville. Over 60 years ago the marriage was celebrated to Miss Mary Jane Riding, and for a period of over 40 years the couple resided on Gostwyck. Of the marriage there are two sons and three daughters living. The sons are George, of Queensland, and Selby, of Woodville, The daughters are Mrs. C. Eichorn (Gostwyck), Mrs. J. Bullock (Salisbury), and Mrs. F. Jones (Uralla). Mrs. W. Hardy and Mrs. T. Bower passed away years ago, while the eldest daughter, Miss Jane Betts, died when 48 years of age. Speaking of the late Mr. Betts, the "News" says:-About 75 years ago Mr. Betts, sen. left Nottinghamshire, England, for Australia, bringing with him four lads, Charles, George, William, and Robert. Their mother had passed away, and he came out to make a new home in Australia. Work was commenced on Salisbury Estate, but before many years had gone by, the father passed away, and the sons struck out for themselves. Charles went to work at Gostwyck, and saw the sun rise and set there for 51 years, when the owner retired him and provided him and his good helpmate with a cottage to live in at Woodville. For the principal part of 51 years he was head stockman, and could tell many interesting stories of the blacks in the early days. Mr. George Betts is out on Salisbury, and Mr. William Betts resides at Boorolong. He is nearing 80, while his brother George is 82, About 11 years ago Mr. Robert Betts (who was generally called Bates), answered the Last Call in Glen Innes, where he was coach driver for many years.
