He left Arkansas in 1929 or 1930 not having finished High School, but when he returned in 1937, to visit, the School gave him a certificate of graduation. He did take one college class years later. On his journey to Massachusetts he worked on a river boat on the Mississippi River. He was in the navy in WW II in the position of Pharmacist first mate. He, Kathryn , and their child made their home in Northampton. Charles was the head of Manual Arts Therapy at the VA hospital in Leeds. He had a second occupation as a ceramic studio owner. .
