Charles Brownell

Charles Brownell, son of Benjamin and Clarissa (Baldwin) Ritchie, was born in Sand Lake, Rensselaer County, N. Y., October 16, 1816; died in Springfield, Mo., March 9, 1874; married in Troy, N, Y., September 25, 1839, LUCY ADAMS, daughter of Harmon and Grace Millard Adams, born in Troy, N. Y., January 9, 1819; died in St. Louis, Mo., May 15, 1884, they had twelve children, all born in Troy NY. He was a carpenter and contractor and architect..

Children were:

• Francis Edwin, born in Troy, N. Y., July 18, 1840; died in Washington, D. C, March 15, 1894; married Cornelia Harrington.
• Benjamin Harmon, born in Troy, N. Y., March 16, 1842; died in St. Louis, Mo., January 28, 1895; married Laura Martindale, (2) Mary E. Fasbender.
• William Adams, born in Troy, N. Y., December 17, 1843; died in Chattanooga, Tenn., March 24, 1875.
• Harriet E. bom in Troy, N. Y., March 4. 1846; died in Troy, N. Y., June 1, 1846..
• Jane Ann. born in Troy, N. Y., July 28, 1847 ; married W. J. Teed.
• Charles Carrol, born in Troy, N. Y., March 8, 1849; died in Troy, NY., August, 1850.
• Frederic Betts. born in Troy. NY, December 20, 1851 : died in Battle Creek, Mich., January 7, 1902; married Anna Jones.
• James Amatus, born in Troy, N. Y., December 13, 1853.
• Jessie Matilda, born in Troy, N. Y., February 20, 1856.
• George Henry, born in Troy, N. Y., July 7, 1859; died in St. Louis, Mo., October, 1884; married Clara Sebastian.
• Eugene Ellsworth, born in Troy, N. Y., August 14, 1861.
• Charles, born in Troy, NY, June 19, 1864; died in St. Louis, Mo., December 17, 1886.

Charles resided in Troy, NY until 1865, when he moved to St. Louis, Missouri; residing there three years, then removing to Springfield, Mo., where he lived until his death. He was an architect and builder, continuing in active business until his death. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and took an active interest in church work. In politics he was a Republican, and was Superintendent of the Countv House in Troy, NY for a number of vears.

• 1850 census: Charles (34, b NY) and wife Lucy (32, b NY); in Troy, NY w ch. Francis E. (10), Benjamin H. (8), William A. (6), and Jane A. (3). He is a carpenter.
• 1855 census: Charles (38) and wife Lucy (35); in Troy NY w ch. Frances C. (15), Benjamin H. (13), William A. (10), Jane A. (7), Fredrick (3), and James A. (1). He is a carpenter.
• 1870 census: Chas. Brownell (53) and wife Lucy (51); in Springfield, Missouri w ch. Jessie (14, b NY), George (10, b NY), Eugene (8, b NY), and Chas (6, b NY). Also there is son Frank E. Brownell (29, b NY) and his wife Nellie (32, b NY) and their dau. Cora Brownell (10, b Missouri). Charles is a house builder, son Frank is retired Army officer.
