About Charles Bushnell Austin
When the Civil War started, Charles Bushnell Austin hired a substitute to serve in the war (cost $1000). At the second call for service, he became a courier. At war's end, the paymaster offered to pay him in silver money, but he refused when he found out the others were to be paid in Confederate paper money. The 1870 census shows him to be a farmer.
