Charles was born in 1847 in York, Western Australia, the son of James Coles and Charlotte Webb. His birth does not appear to have been registered.[1]

He married Harriet Horton on 15 July 1875 at York.[1] They had five children in twelve years.

Charles was noted as a farmer in the 1875 AImanac at Hackie Road. He was also a team owner in 1875. He employed a Ticket of Leave man in 1873 at "Greenhills", York.[1]

A man named Charles Coles died here on Friday from inflammation of the lungs. Deceased leaves a wife and a large family.[2]
