About Charles Christopher Dibert

Notes for Charles Christopher Dibert:

General Notes:

Killed by Indians, when doing farm work on one of his fields in Dutch Corner.

His children entered a Land Application for the land that Christopher owned, on 12/13/1766. The land was listed as on Miller's Run, adjacent to his own land and William Trent's plantation.

Birth: 1719 - Dutch Corner - Bedford County - Pennsylvania Death: 1757 - Dutch Corner - Bedford County - Pennsylvania

Born in Fort Wingam near Dutch Corner PA, son of French Huguenot refugee John Dibert and Mary Seaworth Chartier Dibert. At the time this was still Indian territory and not open to European settlement - but Mary Seaworth Chartier's mother was a pure-Shawnee Native American and so the family felt safe. They built their settlement and called it Fort Wingwan (aka Wingwam) in 1710. They had twelve children there.

Eve Margaret Ney was born in 1720 in Jamestown, Prince Edward, Virginia. . She died in 1815 in Dutch Corner, Bedford, Pennsylvania, USA.

Charles Christopher Dibert and Eve Margaret Ney were married in 1738 in Virginia. They had the following children:

John Dibert was born in 1746 in Fort Wingham, Dutch Corner, Bedford Co., PA. He married Mary Earnest in 1785 in Bedford, Bedford, Pennsylvania, USA. He died in 1808 in Buried Dibert Farm Cemetary, Dutch Corner, Bedford Co, PA.

Michael Dibert was born in 1738. He married Margaret Miller in 1761 in Bedford, Pennsylvania, United States. He died in 1824

Frederick Dibert was born in 1750. He died on Aug 27, 1818 in Dutch Corner, Bedford Co., PA.

Margaret Dibert was born in 1743. She died in 1784.

Born in Fort Wingham near Dutch Corner PA, son of John Dibert and Mary Seaworth Dibert. One of only five children to survive an indian attack which killed his parents and seven brothers and sisters. They ran back to their parents former home in Manakin Town, VA. Christopher later returned to the land his father had worked on, along with his wife Eve. He, himself, was killed by indians in 1757 while working in one of his fields in Dutch Corner.

In 1732, however, the Indians attacked, killing seven children and parents, John and Mary Dibert. Led by their 16-year old sister, the five escaping children, including 13-year old Charles Christopher, survived a 250-mile trek across the Appalachian mountains to their parents' former home in Manakin Town, Virginia (near Richmond).

In 1740, now married, Charles Christopher returned to the land his father had worked on, along with his wife Eve-Margaret (Nei) Dibert, with a one-year old son Michael. They had at least 3 sons and 2 daughters together. Charles Christopher, himself, was killed by indians in 1757 while working in one of his fields in Dutch Corner, by now opened up for settlement. His grave is the oldest recorded that still exists in Bedford County. Despite these tragedies, the family remained in Bedford and many local families descend from them. Names include Deibert, Dibert, DiBert, Deburt, Burt, Debart and Bart.

Charles "Christopher" DE BURT was born in 1719 in Cumberland/Bedford Co, Pennsylvania. He was approximately 13 at the time that the "Deibert Massacre" occurred killing his parents and several siblings and he traveled with his remaining siblings back to Virginia. Christopher was married to Eve in 1738/1739 in Virginia (some believe her to be his cousin Elizabeth Eve, the daughter of Henry DAUBERT, Christopher's uncle; many others say Christopher's wife was Eve Margaret NEY or NEI, who was also of French ancestry; proof of either has yet to be seen by this researcher). Eve was born in 1720 in Jamestown, Prince Edward County, Virginia. Christopher and Eve eventually returned with their year-old son Michael about 1740/1741 to the land that had been his childhood home and settled in an area north of Bedford, Pennsylvania now known as Dutch Corner. In 1757, Christopher, like his father before him, was massacred and scalped by Indians. A new marker was set on his grave in 1920 to preserve it for posterity as it is the oldest known grave in Bedford County. Eve remained in the area and raised their five children alone, dying in 1815 at the age of 95. She was buried in Messiah Lutheran Cemetery, Dutch Corner, Bedford Co, Pennsylvania, near the spot where Christopher's grave lies.

Just think of what it must have been like to arrive in the wilderness as a young bride at the place that would be her home for the next 75 years. Then, when her husband was killed about 17 years later, to remain and cope alone with raising the children in an undeveloped part of the country through many years of change and hardship. Christopher was killed almost twenty years before the Revolutionary War. We have to wonder what she, the matriarch of our family, endured through those many years alone of change, war, and a developing nation on the wild frontier.

Christopher's generation seems to be the first one to spell the name as Dibert. Our branch of the family has retained the Dibert spelling through the years. Most Dibert relations (including the variations) have been found to descend from Christopher and Eve. Charles "Christopher" DE BURT and Eve had the following children:

  • *Michael DIBERT.

Margaret DIBERT was born in 1743 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. She was married to John MILLER (son of Christian "Christopher" MILLER and Eve Elizabeth EARNEST) in 1772. Their known children include Rosanna MILLER, Mary Ann MILLER, Christiana MILLER, Eve MILLER, Susanna MILLER, and Catherine MILLER.
John DIBERT was born about 1746 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He fought in the Revolutionary War. He died in 1808. He was married (1) to Ene (Eve) ICKES (daughter of Johann Peter ICKES) about 1771. Their known children include David DIBERT, Elizabeth DIBERT, Susannah DIBERT, Ene DIBERT, and Barbara DIBERT. John was married (2) to Mary (Molly) EARNEST (daughter of Henry EARNEST and Eve "Indian Eve" IMLER) in 1786. Their known children include Margaret DIBERT, John DIBERT, Catharine DIBERT, Mary DIBERT, and Rachel DIBERT.
Sophia DIBERT was born about 1748. She was married to Joseph MILLER (son of Christian "Christopher" MILLER and Eve Elizabeth EARNEST).
Frederick E DIBERT was born in 1750 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1826. He was married to Magdaline STEELE about 1770. Their known children include Eve DIBERT, Jacob DIBERT, Fredrick DIBERT, Mary DIBERT, Michael DIBERT, Elizabeth DIBERT, John H DIBERT, and Christopher DIBERT.
