According to Lois Selby, lookup volunteer for GenWeb: "Charles took the Oath of Allegiance before Hon. Samuel Lane, on 1 March 1778 ("Revolutionary Patriots of Anne Arundel County, Maryland," Henry C. Peden, Jr.); In the book Immigrant Ancestors of Marylanders by Martha & Bill Reamy pg 59, Charles Drury from England to America and married Mrs Alice Adney widow of Moses Adney. After her death he married Miss Cole of Sudley, Anne Arundel Co, and had 3 sons: Charles, William and Samuel. Charles the immigrant, and his sons forfeited lands in England because of their support of the American Revolution. (This is not congruent with the Charles Drury will I show below. That will lists five sons: Henry Childs, Charles, Samuel, Jerningham, and Joseph. This Charles Drury may be the father of the Charles Drury of that will?!)

From Pat Bishop Obrist, researcher of Drury in Saint Mary's County, Maryland; her e-mail message to the Drury-L Rootsweb mail list, dated 10-30-1999:

"Hi to all -- Jan, I think this passage may help to clarify your questions from several months ago about who the Charles Drury was who married the widow of Moses Adney. This comes from "Ter'y History of Maryland Vol I, p 757" by M. P. Andrews (1925). Apparently there is a copy in the D.A.R. library in Washington D.C. - 'John Drury, a Norman Gentleman, who came into England from France in 1066 with William the Conquerer and settled in Suffolk. His descendants continued in possession of the estate for over six hundred years. Queen Elizabeth sent an army under Sir William Drury to assist the Scotch Protestant party who were upholding the young King James VI. In 1576 Sir William Drury was appointed president of Munster. From John Drury spring the Drury family of Hunsted, England, who built Drury House in London, and the road leading to it has been known as Drury Lane (1573), Sir William Drury was succeeded by his son, Sir Robert Drury who, dying in 1615, left his house in Drury Lane to his cousin Henry Drury. Charles, a descendant of Henry Drury, emigrated to America and married Mrs. Adney, the widow of Moses Adney. Following her death he wedded Miss Cole of Sudley, Anne Arundel County, Maryland and by this marriage he had three sons: Charles, William, and Samuel. Charles, the immigrant, and his sons forfeited all rights and interest in extensive property in England because they openly supported the cause of the American Freedom and bore arms against the Mother country.' If this passage is correct it establishes that, though related in England, this branch of the Drury family is not descended from anyone in St. Mary's County. I have a few additional references on Charles in America. They all agree with the above information."

Also from Patricia Bishop Obrist, 10-30-1999: "As early as the reign of Elizabeth I (by October 1579), William DRURY was sent to be Lord Deputy of Ireland. This William is a desc. of the DRURYS of Suffolk, Eng. William was the son of Sir Roger DRURY and Felice DUNSTON. This family is documented in Arthur Campling's book, "The History of the Family of Drury from the Counties of Suffolk and Norfolk," 1937, Michael, Hughes and Clark, London. This William is the ancestor of Charles DRURY of Anne Arundel Co., MD."
