About Charles Nash Goodman

  • Charles was christened 4 May 1834 Rickmansworth Hertfordshire along with sister Harriet.
  • Charles (regimental number 1614) was a soldier attaining rank of private with the British 65th Regiment (Royel Bengal Tigers) initially arriving Hobart Van Diemans Land about 26 August 1846 aboard "Lord Auckland" with others of his regiment. The regiment was later sent on to New Zealand at the time of the Maori Wars unrest aboard "Java" where he participated in some actions until his discharge in Wellington during 1852.
  • John & Sophia lost their eldest child Mary in November 1860 at Lithgow and also celebrated birth of their first Australian born child John in May 1861.
  • He was "stone milling" flour in the Bathurst and Hartley areas of NSW, he resided in Hartley where he is evidenced applying for milling positions in January 1862, before moving closer to Sydney about 1862/3 & is evidenced via news reports of January 1866 working at Joseph Wearne's Flour Mill ("Anchor Flour Mills" of 1 Barker Street Darling Harbour ) as a night miller for about the previous two years when a large fire broke out with devasting affects. (Bathurst Free Press 29 January 1862 page 3 and Empire Sydney 22 January 1866 page 8 and Sydney Morning Herald 20 January 1866 page 13). (NOTE: NSW State Library has a picture of mill.)
