Had a liaison with Emma Hamilton, taking her in as his mistress after she'd fallen pregnant with Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh's child. However, after tiring of her and also needing to seek a rich wife, he hatched a plan to induce his uncle, Sir William Hamilton, to marry Emma.

He had an affair with Lady Elizabeth Berkeley, Princess Berkeley, a playwright and socialite who was separated from her husband, from about 1783.

He never did find that rich wife, and apparently hung portraits of Emma on his walls and kept every one of his letters in the new house he built near Emma's old house in Paddington Green.
