About Charles Absolom Griffis
Pioneers of the Wiregrass Georgia -- Folks Huxford Charles Absolom Griffis was born Oct 30, 1826, in Appling County, son of Charles Griffis (VOL II). He came as a young man to Clinch County in 1853, and two years later was married to Mrs. Cassie Nettles, widow of Marin Nettles (VOL III), and daughter of Thomas Newbern (VOL I). She was fourteen years older than her second husband, having been born Jan 6, 1812. They had two children. After his wife's death in 1880, Mr. Griffis was married Oct 2, 1881, to Miss Jane May, who had been living in northern Clinch County for ten or twelve years, and was a daughter of Samuel C. May (VOL I) of Berrien County where she was reared. She was born in 1839. They had two children.
Mr. Griffis served a Justice of Peace in the 106st district, 1856-1869, and was a member of the Clinch County Board of Education 1872 - 1880. His home and farm was located east of the present Homerville-Cogdell paved road. In his later years after his wife had died, he went to Pierce County and made his home with his son, Judge W. D. Griffis, and died there March 11, 1914. The latter served as Ordinary of Pierce County, 1913-1933, and was succeeded in office by his youngest son, John Randall Griffis.
