RAILROAD LAND OFFICE

Prominent among the business interests of North Springfield in its infancy, was the real estate business, and in that little building, before mentioned, which still stands on the corner of Commercial street and Jefferson avenue, we are credibly informed that $90,000 worth of town lots were sold during the first six months. Besides this, thousands of acres of farming lands were sold during the same time, by Messrs. C. E. and Alfred Harwood, who occupied this office, and were for several years the authorized agents of the Railroad Company, for whom they have transferred nearly a million dollars worth of real estate.

These gentlemen were originally from Bennington, Vermont, but came here from Wisconsin or Illinois. They are both highly respected citizens, and have amassed a large amount of property in the town and surrounding country, in the short time they have been in Southwest Missouri. They both reside within the limits of "Old Town."

In the spring of 1878 the Harwood Bros. resigned the position of agents for the Railroad Company, and Dr. E. T. Robberson was appointed as their successor. The Doctor, who is also a citizen of Springfield, has always been one of the most active and earnest advocates of all measures for the advancement of "New Town." The business of the office is now under the efficient management of A.M. Haswell, who is thoroughly posted in all the details of the business, having formerly assisted Messrs. Harwood Brothers in the office, and being for some time engaged in "grading" and setting prices upon the various tracts of railroad land in this and neighboring counties. Dr. Robberson is thus relieved of most of the care and responsibility of the office, and still has time to continue the practice of his profession. He is also a partner in the large drug store of Robberson & Reed, in the brick building at the corner of Commercial street and Benton avenue, where he has his office; besides which, he is a partner with Mr. McCaskill in a dry goods store in the west end of town, and has a controlling interest in various other business enterprises.

All Pomona students in this locality will be interested in learning of the delightful tributes paid to Charles Edward Harwood, one of the founders of the college, who Sunday will celebrate his one hundredth birthday. Harwood court, the girls' dormitory, which was given by Mr. Harwood as a memorial to his wife, was the scene of a delightful luncheon, which Mr. and Mrs. Aplin attended with other trustees, faculty members and other college notables and their wives.

The luncheon which was served in the patio of Harwood court by the girls of the dormitory was attended by 200. A special feature was the mammoth birthday cake with its 100 candles which was cut by Mr. Harwood. All gathered in Bridges hall, where President Blaisdell, of Claremont colleges, gave the address of honor and the degree of doctor of laws was confirmed upon Mr. Harwood. Mr. and Mrs. Aplin also called upon Mrs. Carrie M. Lamb, who recently moved from Highland into a new home in Pilgrim place, Claremont.

Centenarian Starts Thirty-Eighth Year as President of House He Organized in 1893

UPLAND, Nov. 6 - Charles E. Harwood, Upland's 'grand old man' who recently celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of his birthday, was this afternoon re-elected to the presidency of the Upland Lemon Growers' association when the board of directors organized following the annual meeting of grower members of the organization at their mammoth packing house on Fourth Avenue.

The term of office on which Mr. Harwood is now starting will be his thirty-eighth consecutive year as head of the association, which he was instrumental in founding in 1893. The centenarian presided at today's annual meeting and spoke briefly of the early history of the organization.

C.C. Warren, of Glendora, who was also a member of the original board of directors, was a special guest at the meeting, which was featured by a luncheon at the noon hour and attended by nearly 500.

Upland Centenarian to Make Trip East to Attend Wedding

UPLAND, May 26 - Charles E. Harwood, widely known as "the grand old man of Upland," who celebrated his hundredth birthday last October, expects to leave tomorrow for the East to attend the marriage of his granddaughter, Miss Catherine Elsa Harwood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Henry Harwood of New York city to Charles Lockhart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The wedding is expected to be an event of the latter part of June at Lake Placid. The bride-elect has been a frequent visitor in the West End and has a large circle of friends here.

Mr. Harwood will make the eastern trip over the Santa Fe and will be accompanied by his personal nurse, Miss Metta Fugit. Tentative plans include a stop at Springfield, Mo., where the centenarian will attend commencement exercises at Drury college, which he founded and of which he is the oldest director.

Many View Eclipse Through Telescope

ONTARIO - August 31 - Responding to the invitation of Dr. Ralph B. Larkin, former Ontario pastor and now well known in the Southland as an astronomer of note, a number of West End residents today observed the partial eclipse of the sun through his private telescope.

Included among the many friends was Charles Edward Harwood, Upland's grand old man, who despite the fact that he will be 102 on October 19, displayed an active interest in the sight. The observer saw a reflected picture of the phenomenon as Dr. Larkin explained salient points.

  • One of the reasons Charles E. and Catherine moved from Janesville, Wisconsin to Springfield, Missouri in 1866 was due to Charles' health. The doctor told him to go where the winters were not as harsh. Perhaps that is why he lived to be 102.
