Charles and Elizabeth, and his children from his first marriage, Mary Ann and Edwin Thomas, emigrated to New Zealand, arriving at Auckland in 1859 and settling there. They opened a Wesleyan School in Hobson Street in January 1861, which does not seem to have been a success, as Charles opened a grocery store in Queen Street in 1863. By 1868, they were living in Wellesley Street, where Charles died in June of that year. Elizabeth died in October 1875 at her home in Chapel Street (now part of Federal Street).
