Charles (Andy) Andrews Lockwood III passed away on July 17, 2011. He was 78.

A family celebration of a life well lived will be held in August.

Andy was born in San Pedro, Calif., on Oct. 13, 1932, to Vice Admiral Charles and Phyllis Lockwood.

Andy graduated from Los Gatos High School in 1949 at age 16. He briefly attended Annapolis prior to serving in the Army as a 1st Lieutenant from 1953-56.

In 1953, he married Vera Malters. They were married for 12 years and had four children.

A 1959 engineering graduate of UC Berkeley, Andy worked in the aerospace industry for 30 years.

He married Nancy Joan Maurer in 1966. They had two sons and recently celebrated their 45th anniversary. After living in Portola Valley for 31 years, they retired to Grass Valley in 1997.

Andy was a multi-sport athlete and sports enthusiast. He played football and baseball in high school and was a member of the Cal Bears boxing team. He played flag football and coached youth sports. Andy was very involved in the Bay Area rugby community. He played alongside his sons for the Palo Alto Rugby Club and later served as the club president.

He had a great passion for the outdoors. Fishing, camping and rafting were just a few of the activities he enjoyed sharing with his family and friends.

In recent years, Andy enjoyed reading, watching all types of sports on television and was an avid listener of minor league baseball games.

His laughter will be missed by many but especially by his beloved wife, Nancy; sons, Chris, Mark, Greg and Dave; daughter, Natalie; grandchildren, Jessica Lockwood-Flores, Courtney Lockwood and Pete Ruiz; and brother, Ted Lockwood.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis Canty; and his son, Pete Lockwood.

"He's up with the Angels in Heaven, not lost but gone before."
