Charles Markeaton-Mundy is the direct descendant of Godfrey, Count of Mondaye who was one of the companions of William the Conqueror. Once established in England the surname of Mondaye was corrupted into Munday and later into Mundy. A direct descendant was Sir John Mundy, Lord Mayor of London during the reign of King Henry VIII and Knighted by His Majesty. Sir John purchased the manors of Markeaton & Checkendon.
