Probably born in Ireland. He emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania. He is supposed to be the Capt. Charles McClung who commanded a company of infantry belonging to the Third Battalion Militia under Col. Hugh Mercer in 1758. He was at Braddock's Defeat, and is said to have left descendants in Rockbridge, Co., Va., but I (Rev. McClung) have been unable to find them.

Rev McClung says that Thomas was the first McClung to emigrate to America, coming from Ireland to near Christiana, Pennsylvania in 1729. About 1731 a John McClung came to Boston and in 1734 went to Lancaster County Pennsylvania where he was joined by the rest of the family about 1740. James was the father of John, but his mother's name is unknown. Eight children were James, William, Hugh, Charles, Matthew, Mary, Isabel and John. About 1742 James, William and Hugh emigrated to the Borden Grant while Charles, Matthew, Mary and Isabel remained in Lancaster County, and John migrated to Northumberland County, PA.

The earliest record of the McClung family locates them in Galloway, Scotland. The McClung are of the highland origin. Three brothers, James, John and Robert left Scotland because of religious persecution and settled in Ireland about 1690. They were Presbyterian.The McClungs today are said to be "Scotch Irish".

John McClung, son of James McClung, settled in America in 1731. James and the rest of the family joined him in Pennsylvania in 1740. At that time the family consisted of eight members; James (The father), John, William, Hugh, Charles, Matthew, Mary and Isabella.

About 1742, James, William and Hugh emigrated to the "Borden Grant", Augusta County, near Timber Ridge, Virginia.

The Georgia family of McClungs are directly descended from the Virginia family. The earliest record of the Georgia McClungs were that there were eight children as follows: Sewell, John, Horam [Hiram], Reuben, James, Isaac, Sallie and Annie.

Reuben was born in Ireland in 1777, and lived with his father James in Virginia, where he married Polly Williamson and moved to Georgia. They lived several years in Gwinnett County until western Georgia opened for settlement. They received a land grant in the Brownsville area of Campbell County, now Paulding County, near Sweetwater Creek. Reuben donated land and help found Sweetwater Baptist Church near Brownsville. Reuben and Polly had ten children.
