Charles Venson Medlin

News & Observer, The (Raleigh, NC) - Friday, December 4, 1998 Deceased Name: CHARLES V. "BOSS" MEDLIN SURF CITY - Charles "Boss" Venson Medlin, a longtime businessman of Surf City, died early Thursday, December 3, 1998 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He was 75 years old and was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Gray Morgan Medlin. A native of North Carolina, Mr. Medlin was born on January 30, 1923 near Bailey, in Nash County. He was one of ten children of Isaac and Oma Medlin. After graduating from Norfolk Business College, he married Bettie Gray Morgan on November 2, 1946. In 1952 he built Coastal Ice Company in Surf City and moved his family to the Island in 1954. After managing Paradise Pier for three years, he bought Barnacle Bill's Fishing Pier and Dina-a-Shore Restaurant in 1967. He was a charter member and trustee of Surf City Baptist Church. He was an original Councilman on the first Surf City town board and served many terms. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Lodge #569, A.F. & A.M., and was recently awarded his 50 year membership certificate. Surviving are his children, Douglas Charles Medlin and wife Cathy of Sneads Ferry, Bettie Sue Medlin-Smith and husband Kent of Surf City, Daniel Morgan Medlin and wife Julie of Sneads Ferry; six grandchildren, Chris, Matthew, and Alexis Medlin of Sneads Ferry, Jeffrey Smith of Surf City, Kristi and Tyler Medlin of Sneads Ferry; four sisters, Alice Farmer of Zebulon, Shellie Hudson of Greenville, Maxine Smith of Wilson, and Nancy Phillips of Bailey; and one brother, Wesley Medlin of Pompano Beach, FL. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 5, 1998 at Surf City Baptist Church by Rev. Don Horne.Masonic rites will be accorded by Stump Sound Lodge #733 A.F. & A.M. Entombment will follow in Sea Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Hampstead, NC.
