About Charles G. Mosely
From his obituary:
CHARLES MOSELY’S CAREER.
Although Unfortunate He Was Much Beloved By All.
Charles Mosely died at 1 o’clock a.m. yesterday morning at his residence, No. 210 South Division Street. His own prominence for many years and that of his father, William G. Mosely, and his brother-in-law, ex-Mayor R. W. Cole, and Haley F. Barstow, private secretary to Daniel Webster, both lawyers, and long time prominent residents here, now deceased, justify an extended notice of his career.
He came here with his father's family in 1837, from Massachusetts, when he was 8 years old. When R. W. Cole was appointed postmaster of Grand Rapids by President Taylor in 1849, he appointed his young brother-in-law his deputy in charge of the office, which he retained for four years, and then, rotated out of office, he engaged in the wholesale and retail grocery business on Canal Street about where Dikeman’s building is.
In 1861 a fire destroyed a large part of that block, including his stock. Postmaster Avery tendered him his old position in the post office and he resumed and held it from 1861 to 1871. He then resigned and engaged extensively with John Cole in the flour and feed business on West Bridge Street. The great fire of 1875 swept away his business and destroyed his residence. From thence he followed the occupation of a real estate broker until his death.
His acquaintance in the county was very extensive. He was very energetic and active until the fire of 1875 made him penniless. Until then he was a recognized leader among the young men; his ways were pleasant and affable and he was very charitable. His future was bright. Misfortunes beset him, but could not destroy his courage. With an invalid wife and two sons to care fore, he was unable to keep his place in the front ranks, but did not cease to be a worker and to command the respect of those who knew him well. He leaves an invalid widow and two sons to mourn him, as well as a very large circle of friends who had not lost any of the respect for him.
_____
He died from "Typhoid pneumonia".
