About William Gay Mosely
According to Albert Baxter in The History of the City of Grand Rapids, Michigan, pg 115,
"William G. Mosely (sic) and family came from Westfield, Mass., to Grand Rapids, in 1837. From Detroit they came through the woods with a two horse wagon, and were six day on the journey. He was a mechanic, and aided in the construction of many of the early buildings." (Michigan was admitted to the Union in June, 1836. The village of Grand Rapids was incorporated by legislative act April 5, 1838.)
Baxter also records, pg 175:
"1842-43 Ever since referred to as "the hard winter". Thermometer marked 22 degrees below zero March 23 with snow four or five feet deep. April 10 William G. Mosely (sic), with an ox team drew a cord of wood on the ice in the river to the village from six miles below."
