At the London Central Criminal Court Old Bailey, London EC4M 7EH 51.51583, -0.10194, on Tuesday, 11 January 1876, John Holmes, butler, was sentenced five years' penal servitude for steading bill for £200, the property of Charles Piffard, a barrister, at Calcutta, at present residing in this country, and for forging an endorsement on the said bill. A servant named John Barrett was also charged, but acquitted.

The Indian Daily News says: — It is with much regret that we announce the death of Mr. Charles Piffard, barrister-at-law, one of the oldest residents of Calcutta. His health had been failing for some time past, but it was only within the last few days that he became alarmingly ill. He was a man with very many friends and no enemies.
