Charles Rake
Mr. Charles Rake died at his residence, Olive Farm, Enfield, on Friday night, at the ace of 73. The deceased gentleman was for more than half a century a leading agriculturist, and one of the most prominent men in the forage industry of South Australia. He was of Quaker extraction, was a native of Salisbury, Wiltshire, and received his education at Hofwyl House, Stamford Hill, near London. I In arrived in this State with his parents, after a six months' voyage in the ship Garland Grove, on June 13. 1849. Mr. Rake settled at once on the section at Enfield which had been purchased by his father at the foundation of the State, and had. with the assistance of his sons, worked the property to the present year. In 1889 he visited England and Scotland and the Paris Exhibition, and took great interest in numerous agricultural exhibitions he was able to attend, finding them especially instructive in regard to the developments in stock breeding and farming. ~ Mr. Rake was for many years' a member and officer of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society. He took numerous prizes for his stock and farm produce at its shows, and was especially noted for his breed of white Yorkshire pigs. He was the first to bring from England the breed to popular notice in the State. Mr. Rake was also the first to introduce Italian bees to South Australia. and was very successful in this industry. which did much to improve the honey grade. He was a keen advocate of progress in agricultural methods, and one of the first in South Australia to undertake the making of ensilage. The deceased, who was in every sense o! the term a splendid colonist, was held in (treat esteem for his personal character and business .integrity. Mrs. Rake predeceased her husband some yearn ago. and the surviving family consists of two daughters— Mrs. Ragless, of Callanna, near Hergott; and Mrs. Coles. Kadina— and three sons— Mr. Thomas Rake, of Enfield; Mr. Albert Rake, of Kalangadoo, and Mr. Bevan Rake, of Enfield.
