Timaru Herald, 11 October 1920, Page 2 One of the pioneers of South Canterbury (Mr Charles Rippingale, senr.) passed away at the residence, of his daughter (Mrs W. Howell, Temuka) on Tuesday last, at the age of 85 years, after a long and painful illness. He never took any part in public affairs, but as one of the early settlers lie did his share of the pioneer work of the country in reading and bringing ii under cultivation. He came out in 1864. when 21 years of age, in the Sir Edward Paget, landing at Lyttelton. He worked m Christchurch for a. time, and while there was married to Miss Mary Woodhead, daughter of the late George Woodhead, senr. of Milford. He then came to South Canterbury with Mr Hewlings's survey party. He was farming for a time at Lower Hook, near Waimate, but was burnt out, and lost everything. He removed to Waimate, and worked there until 21 years ago, when he went to live with his daughter (Mrs Holwell) in Temuka. His wife, died some years ago. He leaves five sons and one daughter.
