About Charles L. Roff

Charles L. Roff, farmer, stock raiser, merchant, and Confederate officer, was born in Triadelphia, Ohio County, Virginia (an area in present-day West Virginia), on July 19, 1817, to Joseph T. and Kate (Liptka) Roff. Upon reaching adulthood, Roff traveled to Ohio briefly and then to Missouri, where he worked as a stock raiser and merchant. Roff was married twice in Missouri. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Crawford in the town of Randolph around 1842. This couple had six children. His second marriage was to Eliza Evans sometime prior to 1860 and with whom he had three children. Roff came to Texas in 1860 and settled in Cooke County and established himself as a farmer and stock raiser.

In 1861 Roff raised a company of cavalry for service in the Confederate Army. This unit was incorporated into the Texas State Troops with Roff serving as captain. Attached at various times to William Hudson's Brigade and John P. Border's Cavalry, Roff saw action along the Texas-Arkansas border against both Union troops and American Indian tribes. Roff joined Bourland's Cavalry Regiment and was promoted to major prior to the end of the war. He was also called upon to testify in the Great Hanging at Gainesville trials in 1862. At the conclusion of the war, Roff returned to Cooke County, where he purchased a farm comprising 900 acres near the settlement of Coesfield. Roff died on February 15, 1903, and was buried at Hibbit Cemetery in northeast Cooke County.
