Rose Bay in Townsville was named after Charles Seville Rowe who was one of the earliest pioneers and at one time the lessee of the Alexandre Hotel - somewhere along the course of history the spelling has been cahnged to Rose Bay instead of Rowes Bay.Obituary Few old residents had more warm friends or were more deservedly popular than Mr Charles Seville Rowe, who died at his residence at South Townsville yesterday morning. The son of Mr George Rowe, proprietor of the Chelenham Examiner was born in that town and come out to Australia about 40 years ago to join his brother George Fawcett Rowe in Melbourne. He came north to Bowen in 1861 with Mr J.M. Black and Mr A Ross. Towards the end of 1863 Mr Rowe was in the employ of Mr Black at Fanning Station and was one of the party of 16 who were despatched in 1864 by Mr Black toa settlement on the Ross River which was called after the late Mr Ross, one of the party. The party came to where Townsville now stands.
