NEWPORT NEWS - Charles Waldo Scott, Jr., known to friends and family as "Scotty," was born in Washington, DC on October 30, 1945 and passed on August 18, 2013 at Duke University Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. C. Waldo Scott and Mrs. Mae Hamlin Scott. Charles grew up in Newport News, attending Booker T. Washington Elementary School. He then attended Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, NC and Westminster School in Simsbury, CT. Following his high school graduation, he attended Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. He served in the United States Army for two years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He then completed his Bachelor's degree at Virginia State College (now University). Later, Charles earned an MBA degree from Hampton University. Charles worked at several local banks and also worked as a Real Estate Agent and Accountant. In his later years, he was the primary caregiver for both of his parents. As a child, Charles participated in the Pirates Little League and Pony League Baseball Teams and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the National Association of Investment Clubs (NAIC), the Professional Profit Pro's Investment Club, and the Professional Investment Associates Investment Club. He served on the Board of the Newport News Neighborhood Federal Credit Union (and the Loan committee) and as the Treasurer of his brother, Bobby's political campaigns. Charles was an avid tennis player, Brooklyn Dodgers fan and memorabilia collector, Japanese food connoisseur, wonderful friend, and gentleman. Charles leaves to cherish his memory brothers, U.S. Rep Robert C. "Bobby" Scott and Dr. Jon L. Scott (Shirley), sister Valerie S. Price (Newport News Mayor Dr. McKinley Price); cousins Cheryl H. Freeman and Valentin C. Hamlin, Jr.; and nieces and nephews Michelle S. Taylor (Martin), Dr. McKinley Price II (Amy), Michael Foster, Marcia Price, Jocelyn Scott, Jaielle Scott, and Jon W. Scott, and a host of other friends all of whom will greatly miss him. Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. and the family will receive friends Thursday, August 22nd from 6:00- 7:30pm at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 3009 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News. An Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Omega Service will be held at 6:30pm. The funeral service will be at noon on Friday, August 23rd at First Church of Newport News (Baptist), 2300 Wickham Avenue, Newport News. "Scotty" will lie in state at the church two hours prior to the service. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 2515 Marshall Avenue, Newport News or the , 11835 Canon Boulevard, Suite A202, Newport News. O. H.
