About Charles Snelson

christened October 3, 1678, Eccleshall, Staffordshire, England. --LDS IGI

Another Smith Family. Various grants were made for land in Hanover county to one CHRISTOPHER SMITH, merchant, one of these grants dated September 28, 1730, gives to CHRISTOPHER SMITH 600 acres on Snelson's branch of Hollowing Creek in Hanover. This grant states that 400 acres thereof was granted to CHARLES SNELSON, and by WILLIAM SNELSON, his son and devisee, to CHRISTOPHER SMITH, of said county, by deed acknowledged in Hanover county court February 6, 1727. It would appear that CHRISTOPHER SMITH married a daughter of CHARLES SNELSON, and that both emigrated to Virginia. The family statement is that CHRISTOPHER had a son CHARLES and a son AMBROSE.

•Married: BEF 1700 in England

•Note: It may be proven that Charles was married twice. In the Will from hisson, William, which was dated 1780, William stated, "In case I have aright to any part of my brother-in-law John Snelson's estate eitherreal or personal." During those days, "brother-in-law" meant halfbrother or full brother as recognized by law. So, it can be assumedthat William and John had different mothers. 1

•Note: In his Will, Charles granted 400 acres to Christopher and Catherine(Snelson) Smith on 28 Sep 1730, their share of her father's estate.According to record books of Frederick's Hall Plantation, it list anaccount for "Mrs. Elizabeth Snelson" in 1735. Then, in the followingyear, it was ordered that land belonging to Elizabeth be inprocessioned. 2 3 4

•Emigration: BEF 1716 England

•Note: Charles and his family may have immigrated with Christopher Smith, whomarried Charles' daughter, Catherine, in England prior to his sail. Evidence also shows Charlescoming to the Colony of Virginia through a record of a land grant, giving him land in New Kent County. 2 3
