Charles Stuart was the son of James Stuart and Elizabeth Drummond.2 He married, secondly, Margaret Parlane.2 He married, firstly, Mary Erskine, daughter of Reverend John Erskine and Hon. Christian Mackay, on 29 October 1773.2 He died in 1826.2

He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)2 He lived at Dunearn, Fife, Scotland.2 He held the office of President of the Royal College of Physicians of Scotland between 1806 and 1809.2 He was President of the Royal Society of Scotland between 1807 and 1809.2
