Civil War Confederate Army SGT This service record tells a story of real hardship and illness suffered by the Prisoners of War during the Civil War. Charles Tipton is he husband of Aary Pinknia Moore, daughter of James and Elizabeth Moore. Since the microfilm is so dark and hard to read, I am going to try to summarize it for everyone. Charles enlisted 4/30/1863 as a Confederate soldier in the 11th Regiment Co. F. out of Jackson Co. FL. Charles was promoted to Sergeant on Jan. 27, 1864. He was reported in hospital in Pocataligo, SC and reduced in rank to Private July 27, 1864. He was captured in Marianna, Florida September 27, 1864. He is on the Roll of Prisoners of War received at New Orleans, LA during the 5 days ending October 10, 1864. He is again on the Roll of Prisoners of War at New Orleans, LA and was transferred to Ship Island, Miss. by order of Major General E.R.S. Canby October 20, 1864. He was sent to New York on November 5, 1864. He was received at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor November 16, 1864. He was listed as a Prisoner of War at Elmira N.Y. on November 20, 1864. He died of Pneumonia in Elmira on December 9, 1864 and is buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmyra, NY grave number 1038.
