About Charles (Tooley) A Kandel
On the 26 of February 1919, Young Charles (Tooley) participated in WW 1 He was in the Mrine, and reached Brest, in France .
Charles (Tooley) Kandel, known as Charlie, was one of the owners and executives of "The Sands" Hotel in Las Vegas, together with Charlie (Babe) Baron ,Eddie Levinson and Carl Cohen, during the period of Doc Stucker (associated with the Chicago Mob, especially Meyer Lansky). Frank Sinatra also bought 9% of the hotel in 1954.
""The Rat Pack" started their career at this hotel famous Coppa Room, and Nat King Kole was one of the first colored singers to be allowed into a Vegas Casino at "The Sands".
The hotel had been built by Jake Freedman, Jack Entratter, Carl Cohen and Ed Levinson, with the extra-money coming from Meyer Lansky, Joe Adonis, Frank Costello and Kentucky bookie Eddie Levinson. Howard Hughes purchased the hotel in the '60's. Charles Kandel fought in both World Wars, and served in the Navy for several years. He was National assistant to the commander of the Jewish War Veterans. and Member of the American Legion of Jewish War Veterans. He was a philantropist, founder of the Charles Kandel Scholarship Fund which sent 318 persons of all ages and religions to college in 12 states.
