About Charles Edmund Van Vleck, Sr.
Biography
“The Georgan Inn was designed by Charles Van Vleck as his own personal residence. Charles Van Vleck was a MASTER Architect. He designed our Van Vleck House, home of the Montclair Foundation, for his father,Joseph Van Vleck and several libraries and banks in our area.
The Van Vlecks owned limestone quarries and that is the material used at the Joseph Van Vleck house. Charles was accustomed to working in this material and designed some of the most notable residential buildings along Fifth Avenue, between 60th & 70th Streets. Most notable is that he was the Rockefeller family architect and designed some triplex apartments for them on Fifth Ave.
Then there is the Rockefeller/Montclair connection that brought the Rockefeller family to frequent our town during Montclair's gilded era.Van Vleck designed the interiors of the Gates Mansion (1903) for Fredrick Gates, The director of the Rockefeller's Standard Oil of NJ.These interiors were crafted entirely by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Charles Van Vleck (with his two firms, Van Vleck and Goldschmidt and Starret and Van Vleck) designed Bloomingdales, Sax Fifth Avenue and B.Altman's department stores in NY. The Georgian Inn building, (The Charles Van Vleck House) clearly fulfills all five basic criteria of local historic landmarking designation and merits protections under these guidelines.”
