Notes for Charles H. Wellman
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The death record of Charles Wellman at St. Francis Seraph Church downtown Cincinnati reads; died 3 August 1945
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book of the Wellmann family as I have been able to research it. Information from Church Records, The Dom of Osnabrück, and St Johann Church, Osnabrück Germany, St. Martin Church Hagen T.W. Germany, and St. Johann Glandorf, near Bad Laer. Book History of Schinkel published in 1990. All these sourses are from Germany. The Church records in America so far are St. Paul Church, St. Francis Church, St. Francis De Sales Church in Cincinnati. St. Elizabeth Church, Norwood Ohio, St. John Fisher Church Newtown Ohio. The Cemetery are Calvary Cemetery, Evanston Ohio, Old St. Joseph Cemetery, and New St. Joseph Cemetery Price Hill Ohio. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Wellmann with its lands extended to the borders of Voxtrup and Nahne and also had leased land near the Petersburg in Osnabrück. The Wellmann bridge, a bridge over the Hase river, and the bridge near the Petersburg which gave access to the medow, were built by the Farmars Wellmann to have an entrance to the meadows. (Hase is a little river which flow into the Ems, the Ems flow into the North Sea.) One of the country restaurants affiliated with the farm was closed on April 1, 1919. The brief article from the Osnabrück Volkszeitung (newspaper) of 1 April, 1919 gives a little impression of the life and times of this inn:

"The Wellmann Coffeehouse in Schinkel, the best known since olden times, has closed its doors as of one April, and the news has generated the greatest sorrow throwghout the district. Unfortunately, busness at this old family establishment with the rustic touch has been gitting worse. Sundays the old Osnabrück families used to delight in going to "Mothers Wellmann's" in Schinkel, were, after a walk through the woods and fields, guests could enjoy the specialty: real home baked farm pastries along with a good cup of coffee. Since the reputation of the busness didn't suffer even during the four years of WW1, the closing is painful now for so many nature lovers. This is especially so when they think of the plesent memories that they have of this ideally situated restaurant and then realize that now they will not be able to visit it any more in the future," Near this coffeehouse not far from the Wellmann's farm there is also still a spring, called "Welle". The actual Wellmann farm was already mentioned in olf writtings of 1420 as "domus for wellen" (the home at the Well). Although in 1723 the the Wellmann farm was in bondage to the commississer Klecker, we can say with certanty that in early times it must have belonged to St. Johann's Church. Wellmann in Schinkel was one of the oldest coffeehouse in Osnabrück. Moskau, southwest of the city, wasn't as old, and Barenteich's also came later. Even by the year 1800 the citizen of Osnabrürck found the Wellmann Coffeehouse as attractive as they later did the Schutzenhof. The large oak cast a magnaficent shade and in summer blocked the sun's ray's. On June 6, 1810 the farm Wellmann burned down. But the same year it was rebuilt. And at the insistence of many staunch dinners, a wing was added to the side of the new building. The inscription proclams: "Mr & Mrs Georg Heinrich Wellmann built this house here in the year 1810 on the site of there old house which they had built here in 1796 and which was lost to fire on 6 June 1809."

Even during the time of the French Occupation Wellmann was an innkeeper; his licence, good for the year 1809, reads:Taxes in the departement Weser, District of Osnabrück, Canton of Osnabruesk, a commune of 463 souls. License good for year 1809.

Accordingly J. H. Wellmann, residing in the community of Schinkel, operating an inn, . . . according to law of 5 August 1808, is subject to a head tax of 8 francs, and for the additional 5, a tax of 40 centimes, for a total of 8 francs, 40 centimes, exclusive of the stamp fees. . . we issue this present license for which the said J. F. Wellmann has paid half of the tax due, that is for the first half of the year, in accordance with artical 5 and 8 of the abovementioned law, the remainder to be handed over to the Mayor during the course of the calender year, namely, between 1 Jan. and the end of Dec. 1809 in order that the inn be granted permission to operate freely and without obstruction or hindrance, so long it does so in accordance with already existing police drectives and complies with any that may become effective at a later date. Accordingly, artical 17 of the same statue states that is a personal licence, valid only for the obove named party; it may not be transferred to a third party. Further it must be signed by the person to whom issued as well as by the mayor. Transcated in Osnabrück on Dec. 20, 1808. The director of direct taxaction in the departement of Weser (undersigned).

Until its closing in 1919, the Wellmann coffeehouse was the area's oldest attraction. Osnabrueckers met there, young people enjoyed gitting their exercise there and racing off into the meadow until parents and teachers wouldwarn them to leave. Everone loved to rest under the oak before making the trip back to Osnabrück which took about an hour.

In 1812 and 1813 the town was occupied by the French, especilly numerous were the officers and there were always a good number of Frenchman at Wellmann's. So it was commonplace for friction to arrise between them and the regular customers. In this connction an article from the Osnabruecker Sontagsboten (newspaper) of 1 April 1894 is of interest.:

" What a miserable lot those windy Frenchman were, brought to light from the fact that in very meny homes, Wellman's included, a hidden room was prepaired in which all young girls could be quickly hidden whenever the French were comming. At Wellman's this room lay on the ground floor and was completely comouflaged with hay and straw, One day, while all the men were busy in the fields, the prity daughter of that house overlooked the approach of two such heroes and were taken by surprise while chatting with a customer who was all ready there. Only by actively dodging their advances and threatening to report them could the terrified girles fend off the two Frenchman. Upon the arrival of a great number of citizens of Shinkel and Osnabrueck, only then did they deist and left in a rage because they had been thwarted in their attempt".

Both Frenchman, who proved to be little more than highwayman, knew that they had better be careful on their return trip back to the southern slopes of the Schinkel mountains. But in the vicinity of the Rupperkamp farm, the unheard of happend. They were met by armed citizens who attacted them with firearm. Fearing they would be executed for what had done, the deffenseless townpeople could do nothing more than try to save themselves in the woods, wherein the first protector of the girls followed, and after a long search by the French, he was cut down in a most horrible manner in the area of the Gartlage.

While the truth of this story cannot be proved, it does give us an idea of the goings on in these days. The marker in the garden of the Wellman coffeehouse commemorates this event. It is said to have been placed their by its customer's and bore the inscription "to our friend of 23 March 1812". This menorial can no longer be seen. (read) (In 1997 Katie and I saw the marker. we took pictures of the marker. It was unreadable. There was a large oak tree with a table and two chares up on the first branch. In June 2001 on our second visit a wind storm knock the tree down. We have pictures of the tree and the table in it.) In 1997 we met a Fraw Wellmann, she was going to her 84 year burthday party. We were able to speak to Frau Wellmann only for a few ninutes. In 2001 on our second visit Frau Wellmann had died. The man living there took Katie and I through the House and told us The house now belongs to a cousin of Frau Wellmann. He was only renting the house.)

For several decades at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19 centries, a club met at Wellman's, and they agreed to honor its first member to a plaque. So they errected a memorial to Mr. Johann Wilhelm Wueste, who was also the first to be called up in the army. The memorial has been preserved and is still found in the shady wood under the oak tree in the Wellmann's garden.

In the year 1865 Johann Heinrich Wellmann (known in America as Henry Wellman) and his brother Carl Wellmann immigrated to America, and then to Cincinnati, Ohio. They first show up in the City Directories in 1865. They also showed up in the 1880 census. I also found on the 1900 census where Henry imigrated in 1865. I do not know when the spelling of Wellmann changed to Wellman one (n) on the end of our name. I do know my grandfather Charles Henry Wellmann was born and Baptized 29 October 1881 with two n's on his name. Also on the 1900 census all the Wellmann had two (n) on their name. Charles was born in Walnut Hills and Baptized at St Francis De Sale Church, Walnut Hills now Cincinnati, Ohio.

Johann Heinrich Wellmann married Elizabeth Laudick 29 Apr 1879 in Holy Trinity Church Cincinnati, Ohio. The witnesses were Carl Wellmann, (I belive Henry's brother?) and Mary Menkhaus (The Menkhaus come from St. Maurice IN, the same town where the Laudick lived.) Holy Trinity Church does not exsist today.
